As You Like – Shakespeare Romantic Comedy – Watford

The cast of As You Like It and Director Brigid Larmour achieved a remarkable success in their new production of the romantic comedy at the Watford Palace theatre.

I had seen this play a few years ago in an open air theatre and came away confused by the plot, the mistaken identity of the female lead masquerading as a man and the roles of the other cast members. In welcome contrast, the Palace players pulled out all the stops to explain the elaborate plot and emphasis the language, humour and dramatic artistry of Shakespeare. They showed that his observations on love, forgiveness and the human condition are still as valid today as they were in 1600. For more on this review go here

Wardrobe Volunteers Wanted for Wycombe Swan Youth Theatre Production of “My Fair Lady”

The Youth Theatre at Wycombe Swan is seeking volunteer wardrobe staff to help with their upcoming “My Fair Lady” production.

Joy Griffith, Youth Theatre Producer, is holding two meetings in order to find volunteers to work in Wardrobe for the amazing forthcoming production of ‘My Fair Lady’. The two meetings will be held over the audition weekend in the company of the costume designer and the Wardrobe mistress. They will be held on Saturday 15 March from 2pm – 4pm & Sunday 16 March from 10am – 12pm both in the stalls foyer. These meetings will be to gauge people’s level of commitment; skill and to start planning and discussion.

Joy is hoping to find someone with millenry experience and we will be looking for donations of hats in any state that she can use or adapt. The Youth Theatre will also need donations of formal mens wear i.e Morning suits (ideally in black) Jackets, top hats, ladies dresses (mostly long).

Auditions for ‘My Fair Lady’ will be taking place on Sunday 16 March at 9am. The performance dates are Thursday 7 to Saturday 9 August.

My Fair Lady has become a legend in theatre history. A perfect musical created from a flawless play, retaining the plot, characters and many of the lines from Shaw’s Pygmalion and arranged them with a sparkling score including Wouldn’t It Be Luvverly?

An English Tragedy – Stunning New Play at Watford Palace Theatre until March 8th

An English Tragedy is a new play written by Oscar-winning Ronald Harwood which follows events leading up to the trial and subsequent execution of British traitor John Amery at the end of the Second World War. It raises issues of loyalty and anti-semitism which are still relevant today.

This was indeed a tragic tale and there were moments of high tension relieved by the welcome inclusion of witty gallows humour. The audience was drawn into the unfolding events right from the start helped by the dramatic and austere stage set designed by Ralph Koltai that framed the drama.

The play unfolded the life of John Amery seen through the eyes of his apparently staunchly English Establishment parents and we experienced their pain as he met his eventual fate. To see more of this review please visit www.mychilterns.co.uk

Eddie and the Hot Rods will headline the Hobble on the Cobbles in Aylesbury Sunday August 24th.

Eddie and the Hot Rods will headline the Hobble on the Cobbles live annual music event in Aylesbury on Sunday August 24th 2008

Still riding high on the back of the very successful “Hobble on the Cobbles” (2006 & 2007) free live-music festivals, which saw John Otway’s welcome return to the Market Square stage after 28 years in 2006, and FiSH and Marillion sharing the same stage (after 19 years) in 2007, Aylesbury Showcase are pleased to announce they will be putting together another festival in August 2008.

The date is already scheduled for Sunday 24 August 2008 and a number of bands have already started submitting their application forms in the hope they will be selected to perform on the main stage this summer in Market Square, Aylesbury. Once again, Aylesbury Showcase has partnered up with local radio station ‘Mix 96’ and online media channel ‘BucksTV’ for extensive promotional and media coverage of the event. Once again ‘Class Act’ will be organising and running the sound stages and ‘Aylesbury Music’ will sponsor and supply the backline.

Incredible Difference between BT and Vodafone’s Broadband Customer Services

I recently switched to the Vodafone-at-Home bundled telephone and broadband service from my old (expensive) BT broadband service. I have been pleasantly surprised by the responsive and quality of Vodafone’s broadband customer services.

Unlike BT who regularly kept me waiting up to one hour listening to a recorded message in a queue, I always get straight through to the Vodafone broadband support team. Unlike BT’s call centre located in Bangalore Vodafone’s customer reps are located closer to home in Derry, Northern Ireland and can be contacted 24 hours a day.

I recommend anyone with a Vodafone mobile phone contract to check out the Vodafone-at-Home service which includes the broadband, unlimited local and national calls and there is no need to pay the BT Line Rental – now Vodafone have bundled the line rental into their service. It is also to access your monthly bill details online.

Perhaps one day BT will offer a joined up customer service where they do not treat the broadband services as a separate company where you are redirected into another long calling queue after waiting an hour or more to reach a “human” Indian located customer rep. Dealing with BT is a nightmare.
