42nd Street at Wycombe Swan in High Wycombe UK

Tap, tappetty tap, nifty footwork and excellent ensemble drilling are the things that got the audience going at 42nd Street. And, of course, the variety of evergreen songs. “We’re in the Money” must have had special appeal for the first New York audiences because the show was written during the Depression of 1933. Other songs which haven’t faded are “You’re getting to be a habit with me,” “I only have eyes for you,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “Shuffle off to Buffalo.”

The Phoenician Women by Tight Fit Theatre, Wycombe Town Hall

The Phoenician Women.  A new version of the classic play by Euripides written and directed by Mark Oldknow. Tight Fit Theatre. Wycombe Swan Town Hall. September 27 to 29.

I first saw this excellent adaptation, which narrates the fall of the house of Oedipus, when the company put it on in March 2000. I thought it was wonderful then, and although I knew more what to expect this time, I thought it was wonderful now.

I only wish more people took advantage of seeing Tight Fit’s productions. Mark Oldknow, artistic director, is skilled at adapting the classics – be they Greek tragedy, Shakespeare, Shaw, Oscar Wilde, Pinter, Beckett, and so on. (I actually understood “Waiting for Godot” when Tight Fit produced it!) They are Wycombe Swan’s resident theatre company and I believe they should be required viewing for students and others who are interested in theatre and literature.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Plays to Packed House at Wycombe Swan

PDF Print E-mail
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Lyrics by Tim Rice. Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Bill Kenwright’s touring production at the Wycombe Swan .September 24 to 29.

Young children, parents and grandparents crowded into the Swan to see this colourful spectacular show with Joseph played by Craig Chalmers, one of the finalists in the TV series ‘Any Dream Will Do’. Everyone seemed to know the songs, familiar to several generations over the years since the show started in 1968 at Colet Court, the prep. school for St Paul’s School. Schools have been performing it ever since. One of several West End revivals is right now playing at the Adelphi Theatre in London.
