Many people who went along to the Wycombe Swan in High Wycombe on Monday were, like myself, fans of Steven Seagal from action movies including Under Siege and curious to see how well he would perform on stage with his own touring Thunderbox Blues Band. We discovered that the tour was to promote his new “Mojo Priest” album that is being released this month.
Right from the start we knew we were in for a real Blues Experience when James “Super Chikan” Johnson came out alone as the support act. He began playing authentic Delta Blues numbers on two cherished homemade guitars built from a fan cover and an old cigar box. Super Chikan grew up in poverty surrounded by a large family in the Lousiana Delta where they had to make their own entertainment. He learnt his trade from performing in blues clubs in the
Deep South and it showed especially with his superb slide guitar work.
As Super Chikan completed his set there was a buzz of expectancy from the audience and a gaggle of paparazzi photographers gathered at the sides of the stage. In the wings Channel 4 were doing some filming for a show to be shown this Friday evening which will feature the star. After a short delay the Thunderbox backing band came on and began playing the introduction. Steven Seagal made his entrance in an oriental silk jacket cupping his hands in an oriental greeting, acknowledging the warm welcome with a show of humility.
