City of London Sinfonia at Wycombe Swan March 11th Classic Concert Review

Richard Hickox from Wooburn Green founded the City of London Sinfonia in 1971 and it is the Resident Orchestra at the Swan, so Swan concertgoers have a special interest in it – including those children at Lane End, High Wycombe, where the orchestra has a music project.

From its local beginnings, it is now Resident Orchestra at Ipswich, Kings Lynn, Chatham andOpera
Holland
Park. The CLS gives four or five concerts a year in these towns and accompanies

Opera
Holland
Park singers for three months of the summer.
In these areas it carries out music projects with the local schools and communities and before the concert on March 11 there had been a session for youngsters familiarising them with some of the items in the programme. For those of the audience who wished to attend, there was an open rehearsal before the concert and an interview on stage with the conductor Stuart Stratford who was ready to answer questions. He told us he studied with Russian conductors and had a passion for Russian music, the concert’s planned theme. Unfortunately, Rainer Kuchl, down to play Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No 2, was ill and the orchestra’s skilled Leader, Nicholas Ward, stepped in to give instead an inspiring performance of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 3 in G major which is in the orchestra’s repertoire.
